It's also rather annoying that there is not trial version available with which to assess whether its worth trusting Quicken Essentials with your finances. The way it handles calculations of money in and out isn't as straightforward as it should be and you can't arrange categories in batches very easily has been noted.

Quicken Essentials for Mac also leaves something to desired on its much vaunted reporting functions for many users. Annoyingly however, major features such as the ability to pay bills, store investment transaction history and export to TurboTax have been dropped in this version. It also supports importing of data from earlier versions of Quicken as well as the Windows version. My needs are few, but I need a personal finance app that will.Quicken Essentials for Mac automatically categorizes transactions so you can see where your money is going plus snapshots of upcoming bills and paychecks. I like the app and it does what I need, but I know that at some point Im going to have to migrate to a modern alternative. Had to spend a little time fixing a few things and setting it up, once that was done, no issues. If I encounter no serious issues, I will finally ditch Quicken and its stupid sunset policy and forced online activation for good.

Personally I purchased a license yesterday and will now run it in parallel with Quicken for a few weeks. It does things a little different from Quicken and takes some getting used to. If you are considering it, Id recommend to use it in trial mode for a while and see if it works for you (the trial version is fully functional, but only allows up to 100 manually entered transactions). There is also a mobile app that you can sync via Dropbox (with end-to-end encryption), but I havent tried that. One license is good for several computers in a household, including Mac OS, Windows and Linux machines.
I also tried transferring my data files from the Mac to a Windows computer and can confirm that the two versions are fully compatible.

I use personal finance software mostly to track expenses and net worth, as well as to keep track of my investment accounts, calculate the cost basis for securities etc. I havent really dug into the budgeting function (dont use it) and reporting options yet, but at first glance I didnt notice any glaring omissions. No issue for me though because I didnt use it anyway (mainly because I didnt like giving Intuit access to my online accounts). One limitation to be aware of is that Moneydance has no equivalent to Quickens Express Web Connect it only supports Web Connect and Direct Connect.
It cost me another hour or so to set up automatic online import via Direct Connect, mostly because you have to do it for every account individually (12 accounts in my case), even if you have multiple accounts at a single bank.īut once set up, it works well and seems actually faster than Quicken.Ĭonfirming transactions after importing is a bit different from Quicken (particularly for transfers between accounts), but works well once you get used to it.
Just a follow-up on this: I decided to give Moneydance a serious try and migrate all my transactions over from Quicken.Įxporting a QIF from Quicken and importing it to Moneydance was easy enough.įortunately I could eliminate many of them in bulk using the FindReplace extension.Īll in all it cost me a few hours of my weekend to get all the balances correct.
